How to uninstall CleanMyMac completely
By Vishva Variya · Updated
Short answer
Open CleanMyMac, click Applications in the sidebar, run a scan, then choose Manage My Applications › Uninstaller, select CleanMyMac and click Uninstall. MacPaw says it then removes itself completely, with no leftovers. Uninstalling doesn’t cancel a subscription, so cancel that separately in your MacPaw account or the App Store.
How to uninstall it
- 1Open CleanMyMac and select Applications in the sidebar.
- 2Click Scan and wait for the results.
- 3Click Manage My Applications, then open the Uninstaller category.
- 4Find CleanMyMac in the list of installed apps and select it.
- 5Click Uninstall and confirm.
Why use CleanMyMac’s own Uninstaller?
MacPaw’s support article says dragging CleanMyMac to the Trash is the easiest way but the less thorough one. Its built-in Uninstaller removes the app and its own support files in one pass, which is the method MacPaw documents.
I already dragged CleanMyMac to the Trash. What’s left?
MacPaw doesn’t publish a list of leftover paths. Like most Mac apps, CleanMyMac keeps settings and caches in your user Library, so look in the folders below for items named CleanMyMac or MacPaw (Finder › Go › Go to Folder, ⇧⌘G).
Then open System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions and check for anything still carrying CleanMyMac’s name. Reinstalling CleanMyMac and running its Uninstaller is the other way to clean up properly.
How do I cancel the CleanMyMac subscription?
Bought from MacPaw: log in to your MacPaw account, select CleanMyMac and choose Cancel Subscription, then complete the confirmation. MacPaw says the status changes to Inactive within two to three minutes.
Bought on the Mac App Store: open the App Store, click your name, open Subscriptions, select CleanMyMac and click Cancel Subscription. If you use CleanMyMac through Setapp, the subscription is Setapp’s, so manage it there.
Where leftovers live
~/Library/Application Support
~/Library/Caches
~/Library/Preferences
~/Library/LaunchAgents
~/Library/Group ContainersWhere Peekaboo fits
CleanMyMac’s own Uninstaller is the right first step, so use it. If CleanMyMac, or any other app, already went to the Trash the quick way, Peekaboo’s App Uninstaller looks for leftovers of apps that are no longer installed and shows each folder before anything moves. What you remove goes to the Trash and can be put back, and Activity keeps the session so Undo returns it in one click. Peekaboo doesn’t cancel subscriptions; that still happens with MacPaw or Apple.
Questions
Does uninstalling CleanMyMac cancel my subscription?
- No. Cancel it where you bought it: your MacPaw account for direct purchases, or App Store › your name › Subscriptions for App Store purchases.
Can I just drag CleanMyMac to the Trash?
- You can, but MacPaw describes that as less thorough than its Uninstaller, which also removes the app’s own support files.
Will uninstalling CleanMyMac undo its past cleanups?
- No. Files it already removed stay removed. Uninstalling only takes away the app and its own data.
Where is the Uninstaller in CleanMyMac?
- Under Applications in the sidebar: run a scan, click Manage My Applications, then open the Uninstaller category.
