Your Mac, mapped.

Peekaboo is a Finder alternative for Mac. It lays out every file you own as one calm map, finds anything you describe in plain English, and frees space with an undo for every cleanup.

Finder, or Peekaboo?

Finder is fine for opening a folder. These are the jobs it leaves to you.

Compared with Finder in macOS 15. Peekaboo shows the same files, and “Show in Finder” is always one click away, so you can keep using both.

Every way a file gets lost, charted.

A name you can’t remember. A screenshot you can’t find. A download from somewhere. A copy of a copy.

  1. ⌘F

Search the way you’d say it.

Type what you remember. Peekaboo turns it into filters you can see and edit: kind, date, size, source and folder. No syntax, no surprises.

    • Matches names, tags and the text inside files
    • “Understood as …” shows exactly how it read you
    • Save any search to the sidebar; it stays live
  2. ⇧⌘C

Find the words inside your screenshots.

Peekaboo reads the text in your screenshots, photos and PDFs on your Mac with Apple’s Vision framework. The Wi-Fi password, the tracking number, that quote: just search it.

    • Copy text from one image or fifty at once
    • Hover any image for Copy Text
    • Runs entirely on-device
  3. ⇧⌘J

Every download, grouped by where it came from.

Gmail attachments, ChatGPT exports, Canva designs, Slack files. Peekaboo reads macOS’s own “Where from” data and sorts 900 downloads into a dozen tidy sources.

    • Gmail, Drive, ChatGPT, Canva, X, Slack, WhatsApp, GitHub
    • Any website, with its own badge
    • Newest ten in the menu bar
  4. ⇧⌘D

Copies of copies, found in seconds.

Exact duplicates are matched by SHA-256, look-alike photos by Apple Vision. Peekaboo keeps the best copy and tells you exactly how much space the rest are worth.

    • Size-bucketed first, so scans are fast
    • Look-alike photos, not just identical bytes
    • Pick which copy to keep, or let Peekaboo choose
  5. ⇧⌘K

    Reclaim space. Lose nothing.

Forgotten downloads, old installers, stale screenshots, big old videos and apps you never open, each with a size you can act on. Everything goes to the Trash, never straight to deletion.

    • Review before anything moves
    • iCloud-only files are skipped, never downloaded
    • Optional rules, off until you turn them on

Reclaim space.

A map of your disk you can zoom into, and an undo for every cleanup. Two things only Peekaboo does.

Your files never leave your Mac.

Peekaboo is a native Mac app, about 6 MB. No account, nothing to sign in to.

Your files stay put

Search, text recognition and duplicate detection run on your Mac with Apple’s own frameworks. No file, name or search ever leaves it.

Nothing is deleted outright

Every cleanup goes to the Trash and can be put back from one list. iCloud-only files are never downloaded to be scanned.

Usage counts you can switch off

Once a day the app sends anonymous counts, like which features were used. Never file names or contents. One switch in Settings stops it.

  • No, it works alongside it. Peekaboo is a faster way to see, search and tidy your files, and “Show in Finder” is always one click away.

  • No. Search, text recognition and duplicate detection all run on your Mac. There’s no account and no cloud. The only network calls are the license check and the update check.

  • Only when you choose to, and only by moving them to the Trash. Every cleanup is recorded as a session, so you can put an entire cleanup back with one click from the Undo timeline.

  • It uses the same index, so it’s just as fast. The difference is that you type the way you talk (“zips bigger than 1 GB older than 6 months”) and Peekaboo shows the filters it heard as chips you can fix. The parser is plain code on your Mac, not an AI service, so it’s instant and private, and occasionally it’ll misread you. That’s why the chips are editable.

  • An interactive map of your disk. Every category and folder is sized by how much space it uses. Click to drill in, and send anything you don’t need to the Trash right from the map.

  • Download Peekaboo and use every feature for 14 days, no account and no card. When the trial ends, buy a license to keep going; your library and settings stay as they are.

  • No. You pay once and keep it. A license is $24.99 one-time for one Mac, yours for good, with updates included.

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. The app is about 6 MB.

  • macOS asks you to approve access to Desktop, Documents and Downloads. Peekaboo needs it to show and search the files inside them. Nothing leaves your Mac.

  • It isn’t a full Finder replacement: no column view, no network drives or servers yet, and no editing of Finder tags. It doesn’t search files that live only in iCloud (on purpose, so nothing downloads). And it won’t delete anything permanently, ever.

  • The first index of a typical home folder takes a minute or two. After that Peekaboo listens to file-system events, so there’s no background rescanning. Text recognition runs at low priority in the background.

  • Yes. Choose “Deactivate this Mac” in Settings, then activate on the new one with the same key.
