The best duplicate file finders for Mac
By Vishva Variya · Updated
Short answer
For photos inside the Photos library, start with Photos’ own Duplicates album: it’s free and merges safely. For Lightroom and Capture One, PhotoSweeper X ($14.99). For whole-disk scans, Gemini 2 ($19.99/year) or Nektony’s Duplicate File Finder (free tier). Peekaboo finds exact and look-alike copies in your folders, pays once and lets you undo.
How we picked. Prices and macOS requirements from each vendor’s site or App Store listing, checked October 31, 2026. We looked at how each matches files (contents or names) and whether removals can be undone. Peekaboo is our app; it’s listed with its gaps, like the others.
Before you buy anything: Photos (built in)
macOS 13 Ventura and later show a Duplicates album under Utilities once Photos finds copies. Merge keeps the best version. It only covers the Photos library, not files in Finder.

Questions
Is there a free duplicate finder on Mac?
- Photos’ built-in Duplicates album is free for photos. For other files, Nektony’s Duplicate File Finder has a free version, and a one-line Terminal command can list exact duplicates.
Are duplicate finders safe?
- The ones that compare file contents are, as long as you keep one copy and move the rest to the Trash rather than deleting them outright. Avoid tools that match by name only.
