The best disk space analyzers for Mac
By Vishva Variya · Updated
Short answer
Start with System Settings › General › Storage, which is free. For a visual map, DaisyDisk ($9.99 one-time) is the polished pick and GrandPerspective is free. CleanMyMac adds system-junk cleanup on a subscription. Peekaboo maps your own files, finds duplicates and makes every cleanup undoable.
How we picked. Prices and macOS requirements from each vendor’s site or App Store listing, checked October 31, 2026. Disk Inventory X and OmniDiskSweeper were left out: their sites list no support past macOS 10.15 and 10.13. Peekaboo is our app; it’s listed with its gaps, like the others.
Before you buy anything: Storage settings (built in)
System Settings › General › Storage shows usage by category, and the ⓘ next to Documents lists large files and downloads. Its Delete button skips the Trash.

Questions
What is the best free disk space analyzer for Mac?
- GrandPerspective, free from SourceForge (or $2.99 on the App Store). macOS’s own Storage settings are free too, without a visual map.
Why is System Data so large on my Mac?
- Caches, logs, local Time Machine snapshots and app support files. DaisyDisk’s admin scan can break it down; macOS also trims it on its own when space runs low.
