How to uninstall Avast Cleanup on a Mac

By · Updated

Short answer

Open Avast Cleanup Premium, click Avast Cleanup in the menu bar at the top of the screen and choose Uninstall Avast Cleanup Premium. Click Continue, enter your Mac password, then click Finish when it’s done. Avast says moving the app to the Trash does not fully uninstall it, and uninstalling doesn’t cancel a subscription.

How to uninstall it

  1. 1Open Avast Cleanup Premium.
  2. 2In the menu bar, click Avast Cleanup and select Uninstall Avast Cleanup Premium.
  3. 3In the Avast Cleanup Premium Uninstaller window, click Continue.
  4. 4Enter your Mac password and click OK.
  5. 5Wait for the uninstaller to finish (the survey is optional), then click Finish.

Why not drag Avast Cleanup to the Trash?

Avast’s support article says that moving Avast Cleanup Premium to the Trash, or removing it with another cleaner app, does not fully uninstall it. Its own uninstaller asks for your password because it removes components outside the app itself.

Avast’s steps cover Avast Cleanup Premium 4.x on macOS Sierra through Sonoma. On newer macOS versions the same menu item is the place to start; if it’s missing, contact Avast support rather than deleting files by hand.

Is anything left after the uninstaller?

Avast doesn’t publish a list of leftover files. If you already dragged the app to the Trash, the most reliable fix is to reinstall it and run the uninstaller. You can also look in the folders below for items named Avast, and check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions for anything still carrying its name.

How do I cancel the Avast Cleanup subscription?

Uninstalling doesn’t cancel a paid subscription. Avast points to its own subscription-cancellation help for purchases made from Avast. If you subscribed through the Mac App Store, cancel in App Store › your name › Subscriptions.

Where leftovers live

~/Library/Application Support
~/Library/Caches
~/Library/Preferences
~/Library/LaunchAgents

Where Peekaboo fits

Use Avast’s uninstaller first; it’s the method Avast supports, and it removes parts that need your password. If the app went to the Trash some other way, Peekaboo’s App Uninstaller looks for leftovers of apps that are no longer installed in your Library and lists them for review. It deliberately skips security and device-management agents, so it won’t replace the vendor uninstaller here. Whatever you do remove goes to the Trash and can be put back in one click.

Questions

Where is the uninstall option in Avast Cleanup?

In the menu bar, not in the app window: open Avast Cleanup Premium, click Avast Cleanup at the top of the screen and choose Uninstall Avast Cleanup Premium.

Does uninstalling Avast Cleanup cancel my subscription?

No. Avast says the subscription continues until you cancel it, through Avast or, for App Store purchases, through Apple.

Is Avast Cleanup the same as Avast Security?

No, they’re separate Avast products with separate uninstallers. These steps are for Avast Cleanup Premium.
