Peekaboo · Downloads

Your downloads, sorted by where they came from

The Downloads folder is a list of names and dates. macOS also remembers where each file came from, and Peekaboo uses that to group them: Gmail attachments, ChatGPT exports, Slack files, any site.

What it does

Downloaded From
Every download grouped by its source, from macOS’s own “Where from” record: Gmail, Drive, ChatGPT, Canva, X, Slack, WhatsApp, GitHub or any website, each with its own badge.
Search by source
“pdfs from gmail” or “zips from github last month”: the source is a filter like kind and date. The inspector shows where any file came from.
The newest ten, in the menu bar
Your ten newest downloads with thumbnails, ready to drag into Mail, Slack or anywhere else, with Open, Show in Finder and Copy Path on right-click.
Clear what’s done
Clean Up lists forgotten downloads (90 days old and never opened) and disk images and installers left behind after installing. Everything goes to the Trash, with undo.

How to use it

  1. 1Open Downloaded From and pick a source.⇧⌘J
  2. 2Or drag a recent download straight from the menu bar.
  3. 3Clear forgotten downloads and old installers from Clean Up.⇧⌘K

When another app fits better

Peekaboo doesn’t download anything: it has no download queue, no speed-up and no resume. For that, use a download manager such as Folx, or your browser’s own. Files with no “Where from” record, such as ones copied from a drive, can’t be grouped by source.

Questions

How does it know where a file came from?

When Safari, Chrome and most apps save a download, macOS records the address it came from. Finder shows it as “Where from” in Get Info; Downloaded From groups every file by it.

Does it upload my download history?

No. Sources are read and grouped on your Mac, and source badges are built into the app, so no site’s icon is ever fetched.

Can it tidy my Downloads folder too?

Yes. Organize sorts Downloads into folders by kind or month, and the “Tidy Downloads every week” Routine does it every Friday.

Can Shortcuts get my latest download?

Yes. The Get Latest Download action returns your newest download, ready for the next step.
