Quick answer

Does a Mac have a File Explorer?

By · Updated

Short answer

Yes, it’s called Finder. Apple’s Windows-to-Mac guide lists Finder as the Mac’s equivalent of Windows Explorer, used to organize files, folders and apps. Click the blue face icon at the left end of the Dock, or press Command-N while Finder is active, to open a new window.

How to open Finder

Finder is always running. Click its icon in the Dock to open a window, or choose File › New Finder Window (Command-N) when Finder is the active app. Command-double-click a folder to open it in a new tab or window.

Where things are

The sidebar gives quick access to your apps, documents, downloads and more, and you can drag folders into it. Connected iPhones and iPads appear there too.

Your files live in your home folder (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures and so on). Apps are in the Applications folder.

How it differs from File Explorer

Finder has four views, chosen with the buttons at the top of the window: icons, list, columns and gallery. The Preview pane shows a document or image without opening it.

Deleting works by moving items to the Trash, which you empty from Finder › Empty Trash; Apple’s guide maps the Windows Recycle Bin to the Trash. There’s no built-in duplicate finder, and Finder doesn’t show folder sizes in list view unless you turn on Calculate all sizes in View › Show View Options.

Where Peekaboo fits

Peekaboo isn’t a full Finder replacement: no column view, no network drives or servers yet, and Show in Finder is one step away on every file. What it adds is plain-English search across your Mac and cloud drives, Clean Up for forgotten downloads and old installers, Duplicates (exact by SHA-256, look-alike photos by Apple Vision) and Disk Usage with every folder sized. Everything it removes goes to the Trash, and every move, rename and cleanup can be undone from Activity.

Questions

What is the Mac equivalent of Windows Explorer?

Finder. Apple’s “What’s it called on my Mac?” guide says to use the Finder to organize files, folders and apps.

What is the Mac version of the Recycle Bin?

The Trash, in the Dock. Items stay there until you empty it, and File › Put Back returns them to where they were.

Can I replace Finder on a Mac?

You can use another file manager alongside it, but Finder keeps running because macOS relies on it for the desktop and the Trash.
