CloudMounter alternative: Peekaboo vs CloudMounter

By · Updated

CloudMounter connects straight to cloud accounts and mounts each one as a drive in Finder, so Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, FTP and a dozen more services appear without their own sync apps, and you can drag files from one cloud to another. Peekaboo starts from the other end: it finds the drives the providers’ own apps already keep in sync on your Mac, puts them in one sidebar and one search with the rest of your files, and shows what’s downloaded and what’s only in the cloud.

Why pick Peekaboo over CloudMounter?

  • No accounts to connect

Peekaboo reads the folders macOS already manages in ~/Library/CloudStorage and iCloud Drive. There’s nothing to sign in to, so no cloud password or token ever reaches the app. CloudMounter signs in to each service itself, which is how it reaches clouds that have no Mac app.

  • One search across every drive

Plain-English search covers Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box and iCloud Drive together with the rest of the Mac, and browsing never downloads a file behind your back.

  • Space, not just access

Every file shows whether it’s on this Mac or only in the cloud. Remove Download frees the local copy and keeps the file; Download Now brings a folder down before a trip.

The honest verdict

If you need S3, FTP, MEGA or a cloud with no Mac app, or you want to drop the providers’ sync apps altogether, CloudMounter does that and Peekaboo doesn’t. If Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive already sync on your Mac and the problem is finding things across them and keeping their downloads in check, Peekaboo covers it alongside the rest of your files.
