Where do AirDrop files go on a Mac?

Short answer
On a Mac, many AirDrop items are saved straight to the Downloads folder. Others open in the app that matches them, and a photo may let you choose between saving it to Downloads or opening it in Photos. To find something that just arrived, open Downloads in Finder with ⌥⌘L and sort by Date Added.
Where does AirDrop save files on a Mac?
- Downloads: some items are saved there automatically, as soon as you accept.
- Photos: when you accept a photo you may be offered a choice between the Downloads folder and opening it in Photos. Pick Photos and it goes into your library, not into a folder.
- The matching app: most items are saved in the app they were sent from, so look in that app.
- Sent from your own iPhone or iPad? When both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account, the item is accepted and saved without asking.
How do I find a file someone just AirDropped to me?
- 1In Finder, press ⌥⌘L (Go › Downloads).
- 2Switch to list view with ⌘2.
- 3Click the Date Added column to sort the newest file to the top. If the column isn’t there, press ⌘J and turn it on.
- 4Still nothing? Search with Spotlight (⌘Space) for a word from the file name.
- 5If you chose to open a photo in Photos, open Photos and look at the newest items in your library.
Why didn’t the AirDrop arrive?
- It’s waiting for you. Every transfer needs an Accept on the AirDrop notification, unless it comes from your own devices.
- The AirDrop window was open in Finder (⇧⌘R). Then the request appears in that window instead of Notification Center.
- Your Mac only accepts from contacts. Open Control Center, click AirDrop and choose Contacts Only or Everyone.
- AirDrop is off. In Control Center, the AirDrop icon is blue when it’s on.
On recent macOS versions, a sender who isn’t in your contacts may need an AirDrop code: click Get AirDrop Code and share it with them.
Do AirDropped files pile up?
Yes. They sit in Downloads next to everything from the web, and a phone’s worth of photos and screen recordings sent over to edit or attach adds up fast. They are copies; the sender still has the original. Once you’ve used them, move them to a proper folder or to the Trash, and empty the Trash to get the space back.
Getting at the latest arrival with Peekaboo
Peekaboo keeps your ten newest downloads in the menu bar with thumbnails, so a photo or PDF that just arrived by AirDrop into Downloads is one click away and ready to drag into Mail, Slack or a document. When it was a while ago, plain-English search finds it from what you remember, like “images from yesterday”, and Clean Up later gathers downloads you never opened again.
- 1Click the menu bar icon to see your newest downloads, and drag one out.
- 2Or press Quick Search from any app and type “photos from today”.⌥Space
- 3Clear out what’s piled up: Clean Up lists forgotten downloads for review.⇧⌘K
