How to clear the Notion cache on a Mac
By Vishva Variya · Updated · 3 min read
Short answer
Notion has no Clear cache button. Its Mac fix is Help › Troubleshooting › Reset & Erase All Local Data, which signs you out. For a lighter clear, quit Notion and delete only the Cache folder in ~/Library/Application Support/Notion. Try View › Force reload first; it often fixes loading trouble on its own.
Where is the Notion cache on a Mac?
~/Library/Caches/notion.id~/Library/Application Support/Notion/Cache
Safe to clear. Temporary files stored by the Notion app. Safe to delete and Notion will rebuild them when you next open it.
How do I reset Notion's local data from the app?
- 1Try View › Force reload in the menu bar first
- 2If that doesn't help, click Help in the menu bar
- 3Select Troubleshooting
- 4Click Reset & Erase All Local Data
- 5Sign in to your Notion account again
How do I delete the Notion cache by hand?
- 1Quit Notion (Notion › Quit Notion, or Cmd-Q) and make sure it isn't still running
- 2In Finder choose Go › Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Application Support/Notion
- 3Move only the Cache folder to the Trash (leave the rest of the Notion folder alone)
- 4Optionally also clear the contents of ~/Library/Caches/notion.id
- 5Reopen Notion; it rebuilds the cache as you browse
What happens when you clear it?
Notion's reset article says 'Resetting your app or browser will log you out of any active Notion accounts', so have your login details ready before Reset & Erase All Local Data. Notion's own manual reset deletes the whole Notion folder in Application Support, which has the same effect. Deleting only the Cache folder is lighter and isn't a step Notion documents: it removes temporary files the app rebuilds, and keeps your sign-in. Your pages live in your Notion workspace, not in the cache.
Clearing it with Peekaboo
Peekaboo’s App Caches page lists “Notion” with its size and the note above, alongside every other cache it finds. It won’t offer a folder the app is still running from, and the cleanup goes to the Trash, so ⌥⌘Z puts it back.
- 1Open App Caches.⇧⌘E
- 2Find Notion, check its size, and move it to the Trash.
Questions
Will resetting Notion sign me out?
- Yes. Notion says resetting the app will log you out of any active Notion accounts, so you need your login details to sign back in. Deleting only the Cache folder by hand is not described as signing you out.
What should I try before resetting Notion on a Mac?
- Notion's first step is View › Force reload in the menu bar. If the problem stays, use Help › Troubleshooting › Reset & Erase All Local Data, or quit Notion and delete the Notion folder in ~/Library/Application Support.
Will I lose pages I made available offline?
- Notion's docs don't say whether a reset keeps offline pages. Pages you download individually are stored only on that device, so check Settings › Offline afterwards and turn Available offline back on from a page's ••• menu if needed. Connect to the internet first so offline edits sync.
